School of Performing Arts Launches $100,000 Fundraising Campaign

The Acting Dean of the School of Performing Arts, Prof. Awo Mana Asiedu, has appealed to individuals and organisations to contribute to the refurbishment of the School’s deteriorating facilities through an online platform designed by one of its alumni in the Unites States of America (USA), which will enable the School receive money from across the globe through Paystack.

She made this appeal at the launch of a fundraising campaign to raise $100,000 for the refurbishment. She said that more money was needed to refurbish the facilities ahead of two international conferences the School will be hosting in 2023. “A total of one million Ghana Cedis is needed to reroof this building and change the paints of the facilities of the other side and additional seventeen million Cedis is needed to finish the building”, she added.

Prof. Mana Asiedu urged all alumni to get involved to explore other ways of raising funds and encouraged all individuals and well-wishers of the School not to relent in approaching her with ideas to help achieve this goal.

Prof. Daniel Ofori, Provost, College of Humanities, in his speech at the launch which was dubbed “SPA Project Capital” promised to support the project with an undisclosed amount of money. “We at the College are going to help you… last year we managed to pull some amount together to fix the floor, so you will get all the support you need in a reasonable limit”, he stated.

Dr. Rashida Rosario, Lecturer and Alunma of the School, encouraged the students to embrace the course and not shy away from it. She urged them to accept and welcome the benefits of being in the School of Performing Arts as it will help them function wherever they find themselves. “It is really sad to see people miss their calling, but when you let the School of Performing Arts go through you, you become what you were made to be in the first place”, she added.

Lancelott Alottey, President, Association of School of Performing Arts (ASPA) in a short address outlined some facility challenges of the School which affect effective teaching and learning. He urged all individuals to donate to this worthy cause.

The launch was a hybrid event and was attended by Dr. Sylvanus K. Kuwor, Head of Department, Dance Studies; Dr. Sarah Dorgbadzi-Ossei, Head of Department, Theatre Arts; Ms. Patricia Tay, College of Humanities Finance Officer; students, alumni and a cross section of members from the University community.
