Centre for Ageing Studies, College of Humanities, Launches A Book on Ageing in Ghana

The Centre for Ageing Studies, College of Humanities, has held a book launch in collaboration with the Geriatric Fellowship Programme of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons. The book titled: ‘Contemporary Issues in Ageing in Ghana: A Multidisciplinary Approach’, was edited by Prof. C. Charles Mate-Kole and Rev. Prof. Akye Essuman. In her address, the Director of the Centre for Ageing Studies, Prof. Mavis Dako-Gyeke indicated that the useful contributions made by scholars and practitioners in the book would offer readers insights into modern issues of ageing in Africa from a multidisciplinary perspective.

The launch was chaired by Prof. Felix Asante, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Development (RID), who, in his remarks, noted the increased relevance of issues related to population ageing in Ghana. He therefore highlighted the significance of understanding contemporary ageing issues in the country’s context, which he deemed essential to facilitate the development of interventions that would create age-friendly communities to promote healthy ageing.

The guest speaker, Prof. Richard Adanu, Rector of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons in his address further emphasised the medical importance of ageing, given that it just creeps up on individuals. It is for this reason that the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, under the Faculty of Family Medicine, has a Geriatric Fellowship Programme. He indicated that it is through this programme that the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons has partnered with the Centre for Ageing Studies in authoring and launching this book, which is expected to cause people to think differently about ageing. Prof. Adanu further highlighted the multidisciplinary approach to authoring the book, which presents significant social, economic and medical aspects of issues in ageing. This strengthens the book’s appeal to physicians, social scientists, psychologists, and members of the general public.

The book was officially launched by Prof. Daniel Frimpong Ofori, the Provost of the College of Humanities, University of Ghana, and Prof. Richard Adanu, Rector of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, together with other senior university officials present at the event. This was followed by the auctioning of the book. The maiden Centre for Ageing Studies book launch was held on Monday, November 28, 2022, at the Francis Kofi Drah Conference Room at the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana, Legon.
