College of Humanities Organises Training Programme on Promotion Processes and Procedures for Academic Staff

The College Registrar, Mr. Benedict Fosu Adjei, organized a training workshop on August 27, 2024, focusing on the promotion processes and procedures for academic staff at the University of Ghana. Held at the College of Humanities Conference Room, the workshop was attended by college administrators, their assistants, and supporting staff. The aim was to equip participants with the latest processes and procedures related to academic promotions, particularly in light of recent changes to the policy guidelines. In his welcome address, the College Registrar emphasized the importance of keeping up to date with the promotion guidelines, which have undergone changes since 2012, with more anticipated.

Ms. Regina Adagbedu, the resource person, delivered a detailed presentation on the components of a complete promotion dossier and the steps involved in the application process. She clarified that administrators are responsible for implementing the guidelines, while applicants must ensure their dossiers meet all requirements for promotion. She outlined that Lecturers or Research Fellows who have completed their probation and have sufficient publications can apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer or Senior Research Fellow. Faculty members beyond these ranks can also seek promotion if they meet the necessary requirements, though some guidelines are still under review.

Ms. Adagbedu highlighted changes to the promotion policy since 2015, including the discontinuation of in-class assessments by the Departmental Teaching Assessment Committee (DTAC) in 2021, the introduction of Metrics assessment in 2022, and the subsequent integration of both Metrics and Assessor methods in 2023.

The Provost commended the College Registrar for organizing the training workshop, noting that the implementation of the guidelines is crucial for the University Appointments Board. He pointed out that some challenges arise from applicants using outdated forms instead of the new recommended forms. He further suggested that it should be possible for applicants to digi-sign the Form 2H before forwarding it to the Provost. Additionally, he recommended the development of an online system to streamline the promotion application process, from initiation to final decision.
